Who is Jian Zhang? Apple’s robotics head who just left for Meta

In a notable shift within the tech industry, Jian Zhang, Apple’s former lead AI researcher in robotics, has made a significant move to Meta. This transition follows a series of departures from Apple, where nearly ten members of the Foundation Models team have opted to pursue opportunities with competitors. Zhang, who has an impressive academic background with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering from Zhejiang University and a PhD in Engineering from Purdue University, brings a wealth of experience to Meta's Robotics Studio. Before his tenure at Apple, he was also a lecturer at Purdue University. At Apple, Zhang played a pivotal role as the Head of Robotics Research since 2015, focusing on the integration of automation technology and AI into Apple’s product lineup. At Meta, Zhang is set to contribute to innovative projects within the Reality Labs division, particularly in the Robotics Studio. This move comes at a time when Apple’s robotics research group, crucial for the company’s artificial intelligence initiatives, has faced challenges. Reports suggest that Apple is exploring a shift toward external technologies instead of relying solely on its internal solutions. Zhang's departure is part of a broader trend, as other key researchers from Apple, including John Peebles, Nan Du, and Zhao Meng, have also left the company, with Peebles and Du reportedly heading to OpenAI and Meng joining Anthropic. This exodus raises questions about Apple’s future strategies, especially in light of its ongoing efforts to enhance Siri and develop new products like a tabletop machine featuring a moving screen and robotic arm for retail applications. As the tech landscape evolves, companies like Meta are keen to attract top talent, offering lucrative packages to those willing to make the leap. Zhang’s transition marks a significant moment in the competitive race for AI innovation.
