Apple adds agents from Anthropic and OpenAI to its coding tool

In a significant move to enhance its flagship coding platform, Apple has announced the integration of agentic coding capabilities into Xcode. This development positions Apple at the forefront of one of Silicon Valley's most exciting trends, allowing programmers to leverage artificial intelligence to autonomously generate code. The latest iteration of Xcode will feature support for both Anthropic's Claude Agent and OpenAI's Codex, enabling a collaborative environment where coding agents and developers can tackle intricate multi-step tasks together. An Apple representative demonstrated this integration in a recent video, highlighting its potential to streamline the coding process. Earlier this summer, Xcode received updates to incorporate OpenAI's ChatGPT and Claude, but the current enhancement marks a broader commitment to agentic coding tools. In a communication sent to developers, Apple detailed that these AI agents will not only assist in writing code but will also be capable of building and testing projects, exploring Apple’s documentation, and resolving issues. The concept of agentic coding, often referred to as "vibe coding," has gained popularity among individual developers and companies seeking to expedite software creation. This approach allows developers to prompt AI systems and subsequently review the code generated. While there have been challenges with Apple Intelligence, including management changes and delays, the momentum around AI coding is growing, particularly among iPhone developers. Developers will need to link their OpenAI or Anthropic accounts to Xcode using an API key to access these features. Apple assures users that it employs an open standard, permitting the integration of various compatible agents and AI tools alongside the built-in functionalities of Anthropic and OpenAI. Xcode serves as Apple's essential development environment, pivotal for creating nearly every app available on the iPhone. The newly updated version, Xcode 26.3, is currently in beta for registered developers and will soon be available on the App Store. In a related development, OpenAI recently launched a version of its agentic coding application, Codex, tailored for Mac users.
