Apple patches ancient iOS versions to keep iMessage, FaceTime, other services working

Apple has once again demonstrated its commitment to older devices by issuing updates for several long-outdated versions of iOS and iPadOS. Although the company typically ceases support for older models after a new version is released, it continues to provide essential security patches for an additional one to two years, allowing users to keep their devices functional as long as the hardware can still handle it. In a recent move, Apple released a set of updates for older operating systems that had not seen new patches in quite some time. This includes iOS 12.5.8, which caters to devices as far back as the 2013 iPhone 5S and the 2014 iPhone 6, along with iOS 15.8.6 for models like the iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, and iPad Air 2. Additionally, iOS 16.7.13 has been made available for the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. While iOS 15 and iOS 16 received their last updates in mid-2025, the last patch for iOS 12 was issued in January 2023. It is important to note that these recent updates do not address security vulnerabilities or introduce new features. According to Apple's release notes, the updates primarily serve the purpose of renewing a security certificate. This change ensures that essential services such as iMessage, FaceTime, and Apple account sign-ins will remain operational beyond January 2027, a critical step to keep users connected as the original certificates approached expiration.
