Apple brings back card payments for Apple Account purchases in India after a four-year hiatus

In a significant move, Apple has reinstated card payment options for Apple Account purchases in India, marking a pivotal shift after a four-year absence. This decision reflects the company's efforts to adapt to evolving regulatory requirements that impact the digital payments ecosystem in the country. The phased implementation enables Indian users to link eligible Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards to their Apple Accounts, facilitating payments for services such as iCloud+ and Apple Music, as well as purchases from the App Store. Back in May 2022, Apple halted card payments in response to modifications in India's recurring payments framework, leaving users reliant on alternative payment methods like UPI, net banking, and their Apple Account balance for digital purchases. This transition underscores the broader challenges Apple faces as various governments impose region-specific regulations on digital platforms. The company has been compelled to customize its services, including payment methods, to comply with local laws, rather than maintaining a one-size-fits-all global approach. Similar adjustments have been seen in Apple's App Store operations in Europe, as well as in response to regulatory changes in Japan and South Korea. According to sources familiar with the situation, Apple has successfully implemented the necessary backend modifications to align card payments with India's regulatory standards. The phased rollout is currently underway and is anticipated to reach all eligible users gradually. Additionally, Apple has updated its support documentation to include this new payment option. The regulatory framework initiated by the Reserve Bank of India in 2021 mandated enhanced customer authentication for recurring card payments and the adoption of tokenized card credentials, while also prohibiting merchants from storing customer card details. This transition disrupted subscription billing for numerous businesses until they could adapt their payment systems. Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint Research, commented on the significance of this development, stating, "It's long overdue but happening finally. This solves one of the friction points for subscription renewals." Despite the lack of direct card payment options, Apple's services sector in India has experienced robust double-digit growth. However, reintroducing card payments is crucial as the user base expands, and customers increasingly anticipate multiple payment options. Moreover, the revival of card payments could reignite discussions about the potential launch of Apple Pay in India, following earlier reports suggesting the company is considering this mobile payment service for the market. However, Apple has yet to confirm any plans regarding the introduction of Apple Pay in India, and the company has not responded to requests for comment.
