Apple overhauls its app developer platform with 100 new metrics, more tools

In a significant move for app developers, Apple has unveiled an extensive update to its App Store Connect platform. This revamped service, launched on Wednesday, introduces more than 100 new metrics aimed at enhancing how developers publish, manage, and analyze their apps across Apple's ecosystem. The new metrics focus on crucial areas such as monetization and subscription insights, offering developers a clearer picture of their in-app purchase performance. While there are various third-party analytics platforms available, the metrics provided by App Store Connect are unique as they rely on Apple’s own data, rather than estimates. Key features of the update include enhanced subscription reports that can be exported through an API, allowing developers to analyze app performance even when offline or integrate Apple’s data into their systems. Additionally, developers can gain deeper insights into user behavior, looking at factors like download date, source, and offer start date. This will enable them to examine how specific user cohorts interact with their apps over time, such as comparing the success of different regional expansions. Another notable addition is the introduction of peer group benchmarks, which allow developers to evaluate their performance against competitors in areas like download-to-paid conversion rates and earnings per download. Apple emphasizes that it uses aggregated data to ensure user privacy, applying differential privacy techniques to safeguard individual developer metrics. Developers can also utilize new filtering options to delve deeper into their data, with the ability to apply up to seven filters simultaneously. To assist in this process, Apple has made available a new App Store Analytics Guide within the Help section of App Store Connect, aimed at helping developers formulate data-driven strategies and better navigate the platform’s features. This overhaul of App Store Connect comes at a pivotal time as discussions around the future of app stores continue. With AI technology advancing and the potential for AI agents to take on tasks traditionally performed by apps, there are speculations about the future relevance of app stores. However, Apple appears committed to integrating AI into its App Store framework, with plans to showcase an AI-enhanced Siri capable of performing tasks within apps at their upcoming developer conference in June.
