Apple overhauls App Store age ratings, adds new 13+, 16+, and 18+ categories

Apple has unveiled significant changes to its App Store age rating system, introducing a more comprehensive classification for apps and games. This announcement came alongside the public beta launch of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, and watchOS 26. With this update, developers are now required to categorize their apps using a wider array of age designations, including newly added 13+, 16+, and 18+ ratings, in addition to the existing 4+ and 9+ categories. Apple aims to provide clearer guidance for users and parents about the content they are downloading. The new rating system also takes into account regional variations, ensuring that classifications align with local content suitability guidelines. Full details regarding the updates are accessible on Apple’s developer support portal. To comply with the new standards, developers must complete a detailed questionnaire for each app on the App Store. This questionnaire addresses various aspects, such as the presence of violence, in-app purchases, AI functionalities, wellness content, and interactive features. Apple will determine age ratings based on the responses, although developers can opt for a more restrictive rating if desired. Furthermore, it is crucial for apps to adhere to regional regulatory standards, including those established by the United States and the European Union. The updated ratings will be reflected across all upcoming Apple platforms, including iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, tvOS 26, watchOS 26, and visionOS 26. Developers are required to complete the age rating questionnaire by January 31, 2026, after which app updates will only be accepted if the new ratings have been implemented.
