In a decisive move to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities, Apple has appointed seasoned expert Amar Subramanya as its new vice president of AI. This change comes at a crucial juncture for the tech giant, as it seeks to close the gap with rivals like Samsung, Microsoft, and Google, who have been quicker to integrate AI advancements into their products. Subramanya, who previously held the position of corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft and boasts a rich history at Google, where he led the development of the Gemini assistant, will now oversee Apple’s Foundation Models and machine learning research. He will report directly to Craig Federighi, Apple's software chief. This leadership transition signifies a pivotal shift within Apple’s AI strategy as the company faces increasing scrutiny over its pace of innovation. The decision to appoint Subramanya follows criticism aimed at Apple, particularly after the company announced a delay in major upgrades to Siri until 2026. Reports indicate that CEO Tim Cook had concerns regarding the speed of product development under John Giannandrea, the former machine learning chief who joined Apple in 2018. Although Giannandrea will remain as an adviser until his retirement next spring, the leadership change reflects broader issues regarding Apple’s competitive edge in the AI space. The resurgence of AI technologies, especially following the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, has prompted competitors to aggressively enhance their offerings. In contrast, Apple’s AI initiatives, particularly the revamped Siri, have not met user expectations, receiving only moderate feedback. Amar Subramanya's role will now encompass responsibilities previously managed by Giannandrea, with oversight being redistributed to Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan and Services Chief Eddy Cue. Tim Cook expressed confidence in Federighi's leadership, noting that he has been crucial in guiding Apple’s AI ambitions. As the company enters this transformative phase, there are rising expectations for more robust and competitive AI solutions across its product lineup.
