Apple breaks silence on iPhone 17 Pro Max ‘scratchgate’ controversy

In a recent announcement, Apple addressed the controversy surrounding the durability of its new iPhone 17 series, which was introduced with promises of enhanced scratch resistance through its 'Ceramic Shield 2' technology. Following the devices' launch, reports surfaced highlighting that the iPhone 17 Pro models were showing signs of scratches merely hours after being displayed in various retail locations worldwide. Notably, users observed that the back of the iPhone 17 Pro exhibited a distinct circular mark after being connected to Apple's MagSafe charger. Even the iPhone Air appeared to be vulnerable to similar scratching issues. In response, Apple clarified to 9to5Mac that these 'imperfections' were likely the result of worn MagSafe stands in certain stores. The company emphasized that these marks are not permanent scratches but rather material transfers that can be cleaned off. Apple also tackled durability concerns raised by popular YouTuber Zack Nelson of the channel JerryRigEverything. In his durability tests, Nelson claimed that the anodized coating on the iPhone 17 Pro's aluminum frame did not adhere well around the sharp edges, particularly near the camera bump. He demonstrated that everyday items, such as coins and keys, could easily inflict damage on these vulnerable areas. Nelson criticized Apple for its design choices, suggesting that adherence to industry standards like ISO or US Military specifications for anodizing could have prevented these issues. Apple, however, countered that the anodization on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max meets or exceeds the durability of similar products in the market. While the company acknowledged that normal wear and tear might result in minor abrasions, it maintained that the anodization process provides a robust protective layer, surpassing standard microhardness guidelines.
