Apple confirms that controversial dating apps Tea & TeaOnHer have been pulled from the App Store

Apple has officially removed two contentious dating apps, Tea and TeaOnHer, from its App Store following serious concerns regarding user privacy and content moderation. The decision was first highlighted by Appfigures, an app store intelligence firm, which noted that the apps were taken down on Tuesday across all regions, while they continue to be available on Google Play. In a statement, Apple confirmed the removal, citing the apps' failure to comply with its rigorous standards for content management and user privacy. The tech giant reported receiving numerous complaints from users, including alarming instances where minors' personal information was allegedly shared on the platforms. Despite communicating these issues to the developers, Apple indicated that no corrective actions were taken by the app creators. The apps were found to violate several of Apple's App Review Guidelines, particularly those emphasizing the need for reporting and blocking features for user-generated content, as well as the prohibition against the unauthorized use of personal information. The guidelines also stipulate that a high volume of negative feedback from users can lead to violations of Apple’s Developer Code of Conduct. Tea, which gained traction this year, was marketed as a safety tool for women, allowing users to share details about men they encountered on dating apps. The app encouraged discussions around personal experiences, labeling individuals as 'green flags' or 'red flags.' However, this prompted backlash from many men, who raised concerns about potential defamation and privacy invasions. Earlier this summer, Tea faced a significant data breach, exposing sensitive information from over 72,000 users, including selfies and identification documents. In response to the controversy, a rival app, TeaOnHer, was launched, aiming to provide a similar platform for men to share experiences about women. Unfortunately, it too encountered security flaws that compromised user data. Despite the removal of these apps, alternatives are emerging in the market. A new app, Tea on Her & Him – Overheard, has gained popularity, boasting 354,000 downloads and climbing the app chart significantly. As the landscape of dating apps continues to evolve, the focus on user safety and privacy remains a critical issue.
