Apple tells suppliers to adopt robots ahead of iPhone 17 launch

As Apple gears up for the unveiling of its iPhone 17 series at the highly anticipated "Awe Dropping" event scheduled for September 9, the tech giant is making waves with a significant shift in its manufacturing strategy. Recent reports indicate that Apple is accelerating its push for automation across its supply chain, a move that has been in the works for over two years but is now being enforced as a standard requirement for suppliers. This mandate aims to reduce reliance on human labor, ensure consistent product quality, and lower long-term production costs, all while diversifying the supply chain away from China. The requirement for automation will apply to all major product lines, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. In a notable change from its previous approach, where Apple invested in the necessary machinery for suppliers, the company now expects its partners to finance their own automation upgrades. This shift has posed financial challenges for some suppliers, as the high initial costs and the operational disruptions tied to the integration of robotic systems have put pressure on their profitability. Despite these challenges, Apple remains committed to supporting its suppliers in sustainability efforts. The company has set an ambitious goal to achieve carbon neutrality throughout its supply chain by 2030. Moreover, Apple is focusing heavily on expanding its operations in India, where it currently has five active iPhone manufacturing facilities run by Foxconn and Tata Group. Reports show that Foxconn has already begun limited production of the iPhone 17 series in its Bengaluru facility, which is poised to manufacture all four models of the new lineup. As the launch date approaches, details regarding the pricing, features, and specifications of the iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, and Air models are eagerly awaited by consumers and investors alike.
