Apple tests iOS 26.1: What’s new and what’s coming next

Apple is already looking ahead, despite the recent launch of iOS 26 just last month. The tech giant has initiated beta testing for iOS 26.1, which introduces expanded support for Apple Intelligence and Live Translation. This update also includes minor enhancements across several native applications such as Apple Music, Calendar, Photos, Clock, and Safari. While this beta focuses on these incremental improvements, Apple has a comprehensive roadmap for the iOS 26 software cycle. Users can anticipate major features like the Digital Passport, RCS upgrades, and an enhanced Siri experience. The latest beta version broadens the accessibility of Apple Intelligence and Live Translation to a wider range of languages, significantly improving usability for international audiences. One of the standout features on the horizon is the ability to store a digital version of users' U.S. passports in the Wallet app, set for release in 2025. This functionality will facilitate identity verification at select TSA checkpoints within the U.S., although it will not serve as a substitute for physical passports during international travels. Apple assures users that this feature will prioritize security, privacy, and compliance with REAL ID standards. Additionally, users will soon be able to utilize their Digital ID for age and identity verification across various platforms, including apps, online services, and retail locations. However, Apple has yet to launch its highly anticipated end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging service, despite endorsing the RCS Universal Profile 3.0 standard. The rollout of this feature is expected to enhance iPhone users' messaging experience, aligning it more closely with iMessage functionalities. CEO Tim Cook has revealed that the company is making substantial progress towards a more personalized Siri, with a new version expected to debut in iOS 26.4 in the spring of 2026. This upgraded Siri will showcase contextual understanding and deeper integration with apps, enabling it to respond to personal inquiries more effectively, such as checking flight details or reservations. Interestingly, preliminary code in earlier iOS 26 betas suggested a potential "Weather via Satellite" feature, which could deliver weather updates without the need for Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. Although this has not been officially confirmed, it may eventually become part of Apple's expanding suite of satellite services, which currently includes Emergency SOS, Messages, and Roadside Assistance, all offered free of charge to iPhone 14 and 15 users for an additional year. As is customary, iOS 26.4 is poised to introduce a new selection of emojis based on Unicode 17.0, with new designs hinted at by the Unicode Consortium. Typically, Apple unveils new emojis during its March updates, making it likely that these will be available in early 2026.
