Apple eyes China launch for Apple Intelligence with iPhone 17 event: Report

Apple is reportedly on the verge of introducing its artificial intelligence platform, Apple Intelligence, to China, following a series of regulatory hurdles and geopolitical tensions. According to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, the tech giant aims to roll out these features by the end of 2025, potentially as part of upcoming iOS updates 26.1 or 26.2. First unveiled in 2024, Apple Intelligence has faced challenges in gaining access to the Chinese market, which holds the title of the largest smartphone market globally. To navigate stringent Chinese regulations requiring domestic approval for generative AI tools, Apple formed a partnership with Alibaba earlier this year, a collaboration confirmed by Alibaba Group's chairman, Joe Tsai. Although Apple initially planned to launch the service by mid-2025, progress has been hindered by ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China. This delay has raised concerns among U.S. lawmakers regarding Apple’s dependence on a company linked to the Chinese government. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee expressed serious concerns, labeling the partnership as “extremely disturbing” and pointing out potential national security risks. Analysts, including Greg Allen from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, warn that such alliances could accelerate China's advancements in the global AI landscape. As Apple gears up to unveil its iPhone 17 lineup at this week’s “Awe Dropping” event, the introduction of Apple Intelligence is expected to be a key selling point for the new devices. With China being the only significant market lacking this technology, analysts believe that the absence of Apple Intelligence has negatively impacted Apple's sales in the region. CEO Tim Cook has acknowledged that the lack of these features has contributed to weaker iPhone performance in China. Successfully launching Apple Intelligence in this critical market could not only bolster Apple’s position in the rapidly evolving AI sector but also help stabilize its operations in one of its most strategically vital regions.
