In a significant move, Apple has formally announced a multi-year agreement to integrate Google Gemini into its operations. This collaboration aims to enhance Apple's foundation models, which will serve as the backbone for upcoming features in Apple Intelligence, including a much-anticipated personalized version of Siri. This upgrade was initially promised during WWDC 2024 but has seen delays since then. Apple stated in a joint announcement, "After thorough evaluation, we have concluded that Google's AI technology offers the most robust foundation for our Apple Foundation Models. We are eager to explore the innovative experiences this will create for our users." The tech company also reaffirmed its commitment to privacy, indicating that the AI functionalities would continue to operate on Apple devices and utilize Private Cloud Compute. While specific terms of the partnership remain undisclosed, a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman from August had suggested that Apple could invest approximately $1 billion annually for the advanced 1.2 trillion parameter AI model that will drive the reimagined Siri. Previously, Apple had collaborated with OpenAI to enhance Siri's capabilities for more complex queries. However, with Google Gemini now leading the way for Siri's transformation, the future of that previous partnership remains uncertain. Originally slated to be included in the iOS 18.4 update, Apple’s promise for an upgraded Siri has been postponed, with the new version now expected to debut with the iOS 26.4 update in March. Apple has outlined three major enhancements designed to elevate Siri to compete with rivals such as Gemini and ChatGPT. The first improvement involves Siri’s ability to comprehend personalized context by scanning through user data, including emails and calendar events, to deliver tailored responses. This means users could ask specific questions like, “When is Mom’s flight landing?” or “Play that podcast Jamie recommended,” and receive accurate answers. The second feature enables Siri to possess on-screen awareness, allowing it to understand real-time content displayed on the user’s device. For instance, if a friend shares an address, users can simply instruct Siri to “Add this address to my contact card.” Finally, the upgraded Siri will be capable of executing in-app actions, such as locating a photo, editing it, and sending it via email. This AI-driven assistant is expected to handle multi-step tasks seamlessly for users. Stay updated on all the latest technology news and trends.
