Apple Music is set to enhance transparency regarding AI-generated and AI-assisted music by allowing record labels and distributors to flag such content during uploads. As reported by Music Business Worldwide, Apple notified industry partners through a newsletter on Wednesday about the upcoming metadata additions aimed at clarifying the role of artificial intelligence in music creation. These new metadata options will enable distributors to specify when AI is involved in various aspects of a track, including the song's artwork, musical composition, lyrics, or accompanying music video. This initiative appears to resonate with users; a Reddit user even shared a mock-up concept of a similar feature just days prior to the announcement. However, the implementation relies on labels and distributors voluntarily opting to identify their use of AI, which could lead to inconsistencies. Competing platforms like Spotify are pursuing a similar approach, while others, such as Deezer, are developing in-house AI detection tools to flag such content automatically. Nonetheless, creating these systems with a high degree of accuracy remains a significant challenge. TechCrunch has reached out to Apple for further details on this new feature.
