Apple lays groundwork for agentic AI on iPhone, iPad, and Mac via MCP support

In a significant development for its ecosystem, Apple has rolled out the Developer beta update for iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, and macOS Tahoe 26.1, paving the way for the integration of Model Context Protocol (MCP). As reported by 9to5Mac, the code within these updates suggests that Apple is gearing up to implement MCP into its software framework. MCP, introduced by Anthropic last year, has rapidly emerged as a standard for connecting large language models (LLMs) to various software applications. Major companies such as Zapier, Notion, Google, Figma, OpenAI, and Salesforce have embraced MCP, which is defined by Anthropic as a means to establish secure, two-way connections between data sources and AI-powered tools. This protocol aims to streamline integrations by replacing disparate systems with a single, unified standard. According to reports, Apple aims to enable developers to utilize MCP at a system level, allowing their applications to share functionality and actions with AI platforms and agents effectively. This initiative is expected to be facilitated through App Intents, a framework that permits developers to expose specific actions and content from their apps, making them accessible via Siri, the Shortcuts app, and widgets. If successfully integrated, this advancement could allow users of iPhone, iPad, and Mac to interact directly with AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, enabling these models to perform actions autonomously within various applications. Although the current code indicates only preliminary support for MCP, experts suggest that full integration may take time before an official announcement from Apple is made. Nevertheless, with the anticipated MCP support, Apple could significantly enhance the capabilities of agentic AI for its users across its devices.
