Apple now makes one in four iPhones in India: report

In a significant development, Apple has achieved a remarkable milestone, with 25% of its iPhones now being manufactured in India. This strategic shift aligns with JPMorgan's predictions from 2022, as the tech giant aims to lessen its dependence on China, as reported by Bloomberg. Last year, India contributed to the production of approximately 55 million iPhones out of the estimated 220 million to 230 million units produced globally. Apple has accelerated its investment in India by beginning the assembly of the entire iPhone 17 series within the country ahead of its launch in September. CEO Tim Cook noted that a substantial portion of the demand in the U.S. is now satisfied by iPhones produced in India. The move to diversify production has gained urgency for Apple, especially in light of ongoing uncertainties in China linked to fluctuating U.S. tariff regulations. This shift was underscored when former President Donald Trump cautioned Cook against expanding operations in India during a business summit in Doha in May. Moreover, India is emerging as a crucial consumer market for Apple. The company recorded shipments of 14 million iPhones in the country last year, marking a 9% increase from the previous year, according to Counterpoint's analysis. Bloomberg also highlighted that total sales of iPhones in India surpassed $9 billion last year. In addition, Apple is reportedly negotiating to introduce Apple Pay in India this year and recently opened its sixth retail store in the country.
