Apple confirms that its Maps app will begin showing ads to users “this summer”

Apple has announced an upcoming change to its Maps application, revealing that advertisements will start appearing for users in the US and Canada this summer. While Apple has long been known for its commitment to user privacy and minimal ads compared to competitors like Windows or Roku, this development marks a significant shift in its approach. The tech giant reassures users that their personal data will remain on their devices and will not be collected or shared with third parties. Furthermore, Apple emphasizes that any ads viewed or interacted with in Maps will not be linked to individual Apple accounts or used to monitor users' physical locations. This new advertising feature is part of a broader initiative known as “Apple Business,” set to launch on April 14. This service aims to provide businesses with company-managed Apple accounts, facilitate device management for company-owned devices, and streamline app distribution for internal software. Similar to services offered by Microsoft and Google, Apple’s Business service is designed for organizations that manage numerous users and devices. It will also integrate seamlessly with Google Workspace and Microsoft Entra ID. Apple's Services division, which includes offerings like iCloud, Apple Music, and AppleCare, has been the fastest-growing segment of the company. It has now become Apple's second-largest revenue source, only trailing behind the iPhone but surpassing combined sales from wearables, the iPad, and the Mac. As shareholders often expect continuous growth, increasing advertising opportunities appears to be a strategic move for the tech giant.
