Apple drops commission rates in China without a fuss

In a strategic move to enhance its relationship with the Chinese market, Apple has announced a reduction in its App Store commission rates from 30% to 25%. This decision follows productive discussions with Chinese regulatory authorities and will take effect on March 15, 2026. The new rate will apply to both paid applications and in-app purchases, while a further reduced rate of 12% will be implemented for auto-renewals of in-app purchases after their initial year, down from 15%. Notably, developers will not be required to accept any new terms to benefit from these changes, simplifying the transition. This adjustment underscores Apple's recognition of China's significance within its overall business strategy, particularly as the company reported a remarkable 16% increase in revenue from iPhone sales in the region during its first quarter, contributing to a record-breaking financial performance. In contrast to its ongoing regulatory challenges in the European Union, where Apple has faced extensive negotiations over commission rates, the company managed to implement these changes in China with minimal friction. Meanwhile, in the United States, Apple recently emerged victorious in a legal dispute with Epic Games, affirming its position as a non-monopoly, although developers gained the ability to direct users towards alternative purchasing options. Apple's commitment to fairness and transparency is evident in the updated Apple Developer Program License Agreement, where the company assures that its App Store rates in China will remain competitive with those in other markets. "We are dedicated to maintaining equitable terms for all developers," the company stated in its announcement.
