Apple unveils Studio Display and Studio Display XDR with new 120Hz display and medical imaging support

On March 3, Apple introduced a series of groundbreaking products, including the MacBook Pro equipped with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, the MacBook Air featuring the M5 chip, and two innovative Mac displays: the Studio Display and Studio Display XDR. Aimed at both casual users and professional creators, these displays are touted by Apple as "the world’s best pro display." During the launch, John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, emphasized the advancements of the Studio Display XDR. He described it as a significant advancement in XDR technology, boasting a mini-LED backlight, an impressive peak HDR brightness of 2000 nits, exceptional color accuracy, and a 120Hz refresh rate. These features are designed to enhance workflows in fields such as filmmaking, design, print, and 3D animation, leading Ternus to declare it as the best professional display available. The Studio Display XDR features a stunning 27-inch 5K Retina XDR panel with a resolution of 5120 × 2880. It incorporates a mini-LED backlighting system with 2,304 local dimming zones, achieves up to 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, and boasts a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, along with a variable refresh rate of 120Hz with Adaptive Sync. Notably, it supports both P3 and Adobe RGB color gamuts from a single preset. A first for Apple displays, the Studio Display XDR includes DICOM medical imaging support, enabling radiologists to examine diagnostic images directly on the screen. Additionally, it features a 12MP Centre Stage camera, a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio, and two Thunderbolt 5 ports. The standard Studio Display also showcases a 27-inch 5K Retina display, offering 14 million pixels and brightness of up to 600 nits, along with P3 wide color support. It includes a 12MP Centre Stage camera with Desk View functionality, a high-quality three-microphone array, and a six-speaker sound system with four force-cancelling woofers. Similar to its XDR counterpart, it is equipped with Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, capable of delivering up to 96W of charging power. In India, the pricing for the Studio Display starts at Rs 1,89,900, while the Studio Display XDR begins at Rs 3,99,900. Both displays come with support for the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, Numeric Keypad, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Mouse. Pre-orders for the MacBook Air will be available starting March 4 through apple.com and the Apple Store app, with sales commencing on March 11.
