On Tuesday, Apple introduced its latest M-series chips, the M5 Pro and M5 Max, which are set to enhance the performance of the new MacBook Pro lineup. These chips are built upon an innovative Fusion Architecture that integrates two dies into a single, high-performance system on a chip (SoC). This integration includes an advanced CPU, a scalable GPU, a Media Engine, a unified memory controller, a Neural Engine, and support for Thunderbolt 5. Both the M5 Pro and M5 Max are equipped with an 18-core CPU, a significant upgrade from the previous M4 Pro’s 14-core and M4 Max’s 16-core configurations. The new design features six 'super cores'—Apple's highest-performance cores—alongside 12 newly designed performance cores. This architecture boosts CPU performance by up to 30% for professional workloads, according to Apple's announcement. The graphics capabilities have also seen a major enhancement, with the GPU now scaling up to an impressive 40-core architecture. Each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator, and the chips offer over four times the peak GPU compute capabilities for AI when compared to their predecessors. Overall graphics performance is enhanced by up to 20%, while ray-tracing workloads can see improvements of up to 35%. In terms of memory, the M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory, an increase from the previous 48GB in the M4 Pro, and offers a bandwidth of 307GB/s. The M5 Max continues to support a maximum of 128GB of unified memory, with an impressive bandwidth of 614GB/s. Apple targets the M5 Pro at professionals such as data modelers, post-production sound designers, and STEM students who require robust CPU and GPU performance for demanding projects. Meanwhile, the M5 Max is designed for users like 3D animators, app developers, and AI researchers needing peak GPU compute and maximum memory bandwidth. Pre-orders for the new MacBook Pro models will commence tomorrow, with official availability set for March 11.
