Apple releases iOS 26.3 with updates that mainly benefit non-Apple devices

Apple has unveiled its latest round of updates for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 Tahoe, with the release of version 26.3. While these updates primarily focus on addressing bugs and enhancing security, they also introduce new features aimed at improving compatibility with non-Apple devices. One of the standout features is the new 'transfer to Android' option, designed to assist users in transitioning from an iPhone to an Android device. This feature enables the transfer of various data types, including photos, messages, notes, and apps, along with the user's phone number. However, it should be noted that certain sensitive information, such as Bluetooth pairing details and health data, will not be transferred. This new capability is likely linked to the AppMigrationKit framework, which was introduced in iOS 26.1. This framework allows third-party applications to import and export data between devices, as well as access cloud-stored content. However, the AppMigrationKit only facilitates transfers from Apple devices to non-Apple counterparts, as Apple already has robust systems in place for transferring data between its own devices. For the transfer to be successful, the target Android device must also support this feature. Google recently rolled out the necessary Data Transfer API in its 'QPR2' update for Android 16, released in early December. While Android manufacturers have improved their update frequency, it will take time for many of the latest non-Pixel devices to receive this functionality. Since its debut of the 'Move to iOS' app back in 2015, which aimed to simplify the transition from Android to iPhone, Apple has clearly been focused on guiding users toward its ecosystem. However, with advancements in interoperability, such as Android's improving support for features like AirDrop, users are likely to benefit from these ongoing enhancements.
