Apple Watch’s latest update drops a lifesaving feature for Indian users

Apple is set to launch a new hypertension notification feature in India, aimed at alerting users to potential signs of chronic high blood pressure. This feature, which was first introduced with the watchOS 26 update in September, is making its debut in the Indian market. Hypertension is recognized as the leading modifiable risk factor for various cardiovascular issues, affecting around 1.3 billion adults worldwide. Often, this condition goes undiagnosed due to its lack of symptoms, which can lead many individuals to forgo regular medical check-ups. Apple emphasizes the importance of this feature, stating that it can provide crucial alerts to users who may not be aware of their hypertension status. The hypertension notifications will utilize data from the Apple Watch's optical heart sensor, analyzing the user's blood vessel reactions in relation to heartbeats. The algorithm works unobtrusively in the background, reviewing data over 30-day intervals to identify consistent signs of high blood pressure. Apple asserts that these notifications could drive users towards making significant lifestyle changes or beginning treatment to mitigate the risk of severe long-term health complications. The feature's development is backed by rigorous scientific research and advanced machine learning, drawing on training data from numerous studies involving over 100,000 participants. Furthermore, its efficacy has been validated through a clinical study with more than 2,000 participants. While Apple acknowledges that the notifications may not detect every case of hypertension, they anticipate that over one million users with undiagnosed hypertension will be notified in the initial year. Users who receive a notification are encouraged to monitor their blood pressure for a week using a third-party blood pressure cuff and to discuss their findings with their healthcare provider, in line with the latest American Heart Association guidelines. This hypertension monitoring feature is compatible with all watches running watchOS 26, including the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later. Users must also have an iPhone 11 or newer with the latest iOS 26 interface, and wrist detection must be activated on their Apple Watch to receive these notifications.
