Apple builds ChatGPT-style app to prepare Siri for smarter interactions: Report

Apple Inc. is reportedly developing a new iPhone application reminiscent of ChatGPT, aimed at significantly upgrading its voice assistant, Siri. According to insiders cited by Bloomberg, this internal app, known as Veritas—meaning 'truth' in Latin—will enable Apple employees to trial advanced AI features for Siri more effectively. Veritas is designed to manage various tasks, including searching through personal data like emails and music, as well as executing in-app functions such as photo editing. While currently limited to internal use, this app marks a pivotal step in Apple's initiative to transform Siri's capabilities. The report highlights that Veritas employs a familiar chatbot format, allowing for multiple simultaneous conversations, storing and referencing past chats, and facilitating extended dialogues. It is built on Apple's new system, Linwood, which integrates proprietary large language models and technology from third-party AI providers. The revamped Siri is anticipated to debut as early as March, following previous setbacks caused by technical difficulties that led to malfunctioning features approximately one-third of the time. A successful launch could enhance Apple's standing in the increasingly competitive AI arena, while any shortcomings could allow rivals like Google and Samsung to gain an advantage. As competition for AI advancements heats up, it is expected to influence consumer smartphone choices. Notably, Apple refrained from highlighting its AI progress during the recent iPhone 17 launch. The company has also been exploring partnerships with leading AI developers, including discussions with Google about deploying a tailored version of its Gemini AI platform. Internally, Apple has reorganized its AI strategy, which included the departure of AI chief John Giannandrea and other key figures. Robby Walker, who previously managed Siri, is also set to leave, with his team now concentrating on AI-driven search functions that are crucial for Siri's development. In addition to enhancing Siri, Apple is reportedly working on AI improvements for its HomePod speakers, Apple TV, and web search features. CEO Tim Cook has described AI as "the biggest transformation in decades," stressing the importance of Apple's leadership in this domain. Although the Veritas app is not intended for public release, it serves as a vital testing platform for evaluating how AI can enhance device navigation and user experience, laying the groundwork for a more intelligent and responsive Siri interface.
