Apple begins age checks in the UK with latest iOS update

In a significant move aimed at enhancing online safety, Apple has begun rolling out age verification requirements for iPhone users in the UK. This initiative follows increasing pressure from the UK government for tech companies to take stronger measures to protect children from inappropriate content online. With the latest iOS update, millions of users will need to confirm that they are over 18 to access certain Apple services. This rollout marks the first implementation of such controls in a European market. The primary goal is to restrict downloads of apps labeled as suitable for adults only on the App Store, ensuring that minors cannot access these applications. In addition to age verification, users who do not confirm their age will encounter limitations on web browsing, along with enhanced “communication safety” protocols for messages and FaceTime calls. These measures are designed to identify and flag nude images and videos, further safeguarding users from explicit content. The introduction of these age verification measures aligns with the UK's ongoing efforts to enforce stricter regulations on digital services. The Online Safety Act, which came into effect last year, has prompted various platforms, including social media and adult websites, to implement their own age checks. Although app stores and mobile operating systems fall outside the purview of this legislation, the UK’s media and telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, praised Apple's proactive approach. Ofcom expressed its support for Apple's decision, calling it a significant step toward enhancing child safety on digital devices. They noted that Apple's initiative places the UK among the first countries globally to adopt these vital protections. While the government has urged smartphone manufacturers to do more in terms of blocking explicit content, it has yet to establish mandatory requirements for companies like Apple and Google.
