AI is hurting Apple in more ways than one: it may force iPhone price increases

The growing appetite for artificial intelligence technology has led to a significant global shortage of memory chips, a phenomenon nicknamed 'RAMageddon.' In light of this, Apple’s outgoing CEO Tim Cook has issued a warning to consumers that the prices of their favorite devices, including Macs, iPhones, and iPads, may soon rise due to soaring costs of memory and storage components. In a recent conversation with the Wall Street Journal, Cook indicated that price increases are 'unavoidable,' despite the company's attempts to absorb costs that have surged by four times over the past year. He characterized the current situation as 'unsustainable,' although he did not specify which products would be impacted or the timeline for potential price hikes. This isn't the first time Cook has expressed concerns about the ramifications of memory shortages; in April, following record quarterly sales, he hinted that these increasing costs could influence Apple's forthcoming financial results. His remarks were echoed by incoming CEO John Ternus, who also highlighted the issue during the same period. Industry experts suggest that if Apple does raise prices, the iPhone is likely to be among the first products affected. The tech giant is anticipated to unveil its next iPhone model in September, which could provide a platform for announcing these increases. Beyond the iPhone, other Apple devices such as the Apple Watch, Mac, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro also utilize memory and storage chips, making them potential candidates for price adjustments. While the exact increase in prices remains uncertain, research firm TechInsights has estimated that Apple might need to add approximately $270 to the price of the next iPhone Pro to maintain its profit margins. With the iPhone 17 Pro currently starting at $1,099, this could significantly impact consumer decisions. Moreover, Apple is under pressure to solidify its AI strategy, having faced challenges in delivering promised AI features. Earlier this year, the company settled a lawsuit for $250 million due to allegations of misleading advertising related to its AI capabilities. The recent Worldwide Developers Conference showcased some advancements in fulfilling those commitments, including a revamp of Siri. However, the need for increased on-device processing may further escalate memory requirements, leading consumers to inevitably face higher prices for Apple’s innovative products.
