In recent years, the surge in popularity of AI chatbots and advanced artificial intelligence models has dramatically transformed consumer behavior, but it comes with an unexpected financial consequence. The unprecedented demand for memory driven by the AI boom has resulted in a global shortage, leading to rising prices that are now affecting even industry giants like Apple. During a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged the unavoidable nature of price increases for the company's products due to ongoing memory shortages, describing the situation as 'unsustainable.' He stated, 'The world is being disrupted by AI and, at the same time, even before we start reaping the benefits of AI in our devices, we are already paying the bill.' Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst with IDC, commented on the situation, noting that AI chips produced mainly by Nvidia are consuming a significant amount of the memory that other tech companies rely on. As a result, smartphone and PC manufacturers are struggling to secure adequate supplies, with many forced to either wait in line or pay extra for priority access. Apple’s recent announcement marks a significant shift, especially as the company has historically been seen as somewhat insulated from price fluctuations due to its strong market position. Ranjit Atwal from Gartner remarked, 'It tells you the depth of the problem. Even Apple can't be safe, as much as they have all the expertise and long-term planning.' While Cook did not specify when the price hikes would take place or which devices would be affected, analysts speculate that the increases might primarily target premium products, such as the iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max, which could see their prices rise by around $100. Some analysts further anticipate that Apple may leverage the situation to gain market share as competitors in the Android segment may either reduce product specifications or increase their prices. IDC forecasts a 20% rise in average smartphone prices this year, making it a pivotal moment for Apple to attract budget-conscious consumers with recent offerings like the $599 MacBook Neo and the $599 iPhone 16e. Typically, Apple associates price increases with new features. For instance, the price of the Mac Mini was raised in May, coinciding with an increase in storage. As for advancements in on-device AI, Apple has been incorporating more RAM into its devices, although new features may be limited to the latest iPhone, iPad, and Mac models due to memory constraints. In the interview, Cook detailed the types of memory critical to Apple's operations, emphasizing the need for DRAM for short-term storage and NAND for long-term storage. However, the high-bandwidth memory utilized in AI data centers is faster and more power-intensive, complicating the supply situation further. The primary suppliers for this memory are Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung, and current production capacity constraints mean that any increase in high-bandwidth memory production comes at the cost of conventional smartphone memory. To tackle the looming crisis, Cook suggested that Apple could utilize its cash reserves to help increase supply, stating, 'We're willing to use our balance sheet to help be a part of the solution.'
