Apple under pressure to shine after AI stumble

Apple is under significant scrutiny as it prepares to demonstrate its latest innovations at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in Silicon Valley. The company is expected to unveil plans for its popular devices and the software that powers them, amidst rising competition in the field of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). A year ago, Apple promised a suite of AI enhancements branded as 'Apple Intelligence' for its iPhones, including a revamped version of the often-criticized Siri voice assistant. However, senior analyst Gadjo Sevilla from Emarketer pointed out that the anticipated features have yet to materialize, which has led to disappointment among users and industry watchers alike. Delays in rolling out the Siri upgrade have raised concerns, with hopes that these improvements will be available for the next iPhone release, expected in the fall. Sevilla remarked that WWDC might serve more as a recovery strategy for Apple, aiming to restore its credibility rather than a celebratory event. Industry experts are keenly observing whether Apple will address its recent AI missteps or focus on less glamorous announcements, such as potential updates to its various operating systems. Analysts Gene Munster and Brian Baker from Deepwater Asset Management noted that Apple appears to have both underestimated the AI shift and over-promised on features, now scrambling to catch up. Speculation is also rife that Apple may pursue partnerships with companies like Google or Perplexity, building on its existing alliance with OpenAI. However, the integration of AI into Apple's ecosystem poses additional challenges, particularly regarding its relationship with developers. Sevilla highlighted ongoing tensions, pointing out that developers feel constrained by Apple's strict control and commission structure. The aftermath of a lawsuit from Fortnite creator Epic Games led to a court ruling allowing alternative payment systems in the US App Store, yet developers are still pushing for more change. According to Sevilla, Apple must extend an olive branch to its developer community, which has been struggling under restrictive policies for years. As Apple continues to incorporate AI into its software, analysts suggest it may need to reconsider its traditional closed ecosystem. Carolina Milanesi from Creative Strategies noted that this could be the moment for Apple to strike a balance between openness and control. Compounding the pressure on Apple is the involvement of Jony Ive, the renowned designer behind the iPhone, who has partnered with OpenAI to develop a competing device for AI interaction. Sevilla pointed out that this development places Apple in a defensive position, as the designer of its flagship product hints at alternatives that could surpass the iPhone. While WWDC has historically focused on software, there is speculation that Apple might unveil new hardware as a testament to its commitment to innovation. Additionally, Apple faces challenges posed by tariffs from former President Donald Trump, which could impact production costs and operations in China, a crucial market for the company. Despite these challenges, analysts believe Apple's loyal customer base will remain steadfast. Milanesi stated, 'Apple users want a smarter Siri, and regardless of the delays, they are likely to continue purchasing Apple products.'
