Apple loses fourth AI expert in 1 month to Meta as AI talent war heats up

In a significant setback for Apple, the tech giant has seen its fourth artificial intelligence (AI) expert depart to join Meta Platforms within a single month, highlighting a troubling trend of internal instability and fierce competition for AI talent. The latest individual to leave Apple is Bowen Zhang, a prominent multimodal AI researcher instrumental in the company’s foundation models team, which underpins Apple Intelligence's core technology. Zhang's departure on July 25 marks a pivotal moment as he transitions to Meta's Superintelligence team. This exodus follows the high-profile departure of Ruoming Pang, the former head of Apple's foundation models group, who was among the first to be recruited by Meta. Pang reportedly secured an impressive compensation package exceeding $200 million, which includes a substantial salary, signing bonuses, and stock options, significantly surpassing what most Apple employees earn outside of top executives. Alongside him, two additional engineers, Tom Gunter and Mark Lee, have also switched allegiances to Meta. With four researchers now leaving Apple's AI division for Meta, the latter is aggressively expanding its new AI department focused on developing superintelligent systems. Reports suggest that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is offering eye-popping financial incentives, with signing bonuses that can reach up to $100 million. The company has been actively recruiting talent not just from Apple, but also from industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic. The recent departures have created considerable turmoil within Apple’s foundation models team. Pang's leadership was crucial in defining the team's strategic direction, and his exit has cast uncertainty over its future. Team morale is reportedly waning, with several engineers exploring opportunities at competing AI firms. Although Apple has slightly increased salaries for its AI personnel, these adjustments fall short of the lucrative offers from Meta. In light of these challenges, Apple is contemplating the integration of third-party AI models from companies such as OpenAI or Anthropic into its offerings, moving away from a sole reliance on in-house developments. This strategic pivot comes amidst broader restructuring efforts, with oversight of Apple's AI initiatives now falling under the purview of software chief Craig Federighi and Vision Pro lead Mike Rockwell. Compounding these issues, competitors like Google and Samsung are already launching more advanced AI functionalities, and delays in Apple’s own Siri enhancements—pushed back until 2026—add to the urgency for the company to adapt within the fast-paced AI arena.
