Apple may tap Intel to build future M- and A-series chips from 2027: Report

Apple appears poised to make a significant change to its chip supply strategy, as recent analyst insights suggest that Intel may begin manufacturing processors for both Mac and iPhone devices by the end of the decade. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently reported that Intel is likely to start producing Apple’s M-series chips in 2027, marking a pivotal moment in the collaboration between the two tech giants. Supporting Kuo's findings, analyst Jeff Pu has indicated that Intel's involvement could expand further. He notes that Apple plans to have Intel manufacture its 'non-pro smartphone SoC' starting in 2028, according to 9to5Mac. If Apple adheres to its traditional product release timeline, the anticipated M-series chipset, possibly the M7, will be the first processor for Mac or iPad made by Intel. Pu's analysis suggests that this partnership may also extend to include the foundational A-series processors used in iPhones. Currently, Apple relies predominantly on Taiwan's TSMC for its chip manufacturing needs across its entire product line. By 2028, it's expected that Intel could be responsible for producing the standard A-series chip for the entry-level iPhone, as well as its corresponding 'e' variant. For reference, the A19 chip currently powers the iPhone 17 and is expected to be featured in the upcoming iPhone 17e. Higher-end models are likely to continue using the A19 Pro, which will remain under TSMC's production. Despite this potential shift in manufacturing partners, Apple is anticipated to maintain its in-house chip design capabilities. This new strategy could bring Intel on board as a second major fabrication partner alongside TSMC, enhancing Apple's supply chain resilience and flexibility. Although any Intel-produced iPhone chips are still years away, these emerging reports indicate a significant transformation in Apple’s long-standing dependence on TSMC, marking a notable opportunity for Intel as it aims to grow its foundry business.
