Apple is actively exploring the incorporation of advanced artificial intelligence models from either Anthropic or OpenAI to enhance the functionality of Siri. According to a recent Bloomberg report, the tech powerhouse based in Cupertino has engaged in discussions with both companies regarding the integration of their large language models into Siri's upcoming update. Currently, Apple's AI capabilities largely rely on its proprietary technology, known as Apple Foundation Models. However, plans are afoot to refresh Siri using these external AI models, with aspirations for a significant update slated for 2026. This shift follows an internal reassessment led by Siri Chief Mike Rockwell and software engineering head Craig Federighi, who took over the Siri project after prior leadership changes due to delays in feature development. Under Rockwell's direction, the team has been tasked with evaluating whether Siri could benefit more from Apple's existing models or from third-party technologies such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini. After extensive testing, findings indicated that Anthropic's AI technology appeared to align best with Siri's requirements, prompting Apple’s vice president of corporate development, Adrian Perica, to initiate negotiations with Anthropic regarding the adoption of Claude to bolster Siri. Furthermore, discussions have included the possibility of deploying custom versions of Claude and ChatGPT on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers, which currently house its more sophisticated in-house models. However, initial talks between Apple and Anthropic have encountered hurdles, particularly concerning financial arrangements. Anthropic is reportedly seeking multi-billion dollar annual fees for the use of its AI technology on iPhones, with significant annual increases. These financial disagreements may compel Apple to consider alternatives, including partnerships with OpenAI or other entities, should they proceed with their strategy of integrating third-party AI models into Siri's framework.
