Apple has officially acquired the Israeli artificial intelligence startup Q.ai, as confirmed by a company spokesperson on Thursday. The financial details of the deal remain undisclosed. Q.ai has maintained a low profile and has not publicly launched any products. However, its website hints at a focus on audio-related technologies. The startup was under the leadership of CEO Aviad Maizels, who previously sold the company PrimeSense to Apple back in 2013. Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technologies, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "We're thrilled to bring the company onboard with Aviad leading the way, and we eagerly anticipate the innovations ahead." Srouji is responsible for Apple's chip development initiatives. Investors in Q.ai included prominent firms such as GV (Google Ventures), Kleiner Perkins, and Spark Capital. According to PitchBook, Q.ai was developing technology aimed at enhancing communication capabilities. In recent years, Apple has integrated AI advancements into its AirPods, introducing features like real-time translation and smart noise cancellation that can detect when the user is engaged in conversation. There has been growing pressure on Apple to make significant investments in AI, especially as major competitors ramp up their spending on advanced AI models and the necessary infrastructure. Meanwhile, enhancements to Apple's products, including a more personalized Siri capable of utilizing various applications, have experienced delays. Typically, Apple opts to acquire smaller firms with niche technologies that can be seamlessly integrated into its existing products. Earlier this month, Apple also announced a collaboration with Google, utilizing its Gemini models to enhance certain Apple Intelligence features. In July, CEO Tim Cook remarked, "We remain open to mergers and acquisitions that can expedite our strategic roadmap." Maizels' previous venture, PrimeSense, pioneered technology that enabled sensors to measure distances between objects, which became integral to Apple's Face ID system starting in 2017.
