Apple is significantly enhancing its artificial intelligence capabilities with a new recruitment drive for its internal group, known as the Answers, Knowledge, and Information (AKI) team. Established earlier this year, this team is focused on creating an advanced 'answer engine' aimed at delivering more informative and contextually aware responses to user inquiries, similar to the functionality of ChatGPT. At the heart of Apple's renewed AI strategy, the AKI team plays a crucial role in enhancing features across its ecosystem, particularly in Siri, Safari, and Spotlight. The team is led by Robby Walker, a senior director who now reports to John Giannandrea, Apple's AI chief. Walker, who previously oversaw the development of Siri, transitioned to AKI following delays in the rollout of more sophisticated AI features for the voice assistant. Several other former Siri team members have joined Walker in this new venture, aiming to drive forward Apple's AI initiatives. Current job postings on Apple’s career portal indicate that there are more than a dozen open positions for the AKI team across the United States and China, highlighting the company’s ambition to broaden its AI capabilities. One of the key roles available is for a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, tasked with enhancing Siri's ability to respond to personalized user queries while ensuring privacy protections are in place. The job description outlines responsibilities that include designing and refining large language models (LLMs), conducting experiments to evaluate and enhance performance, and developing the data pipelines necessary for these efforts. The team is particularly interested in candidates who are skilled in fine-tuning models through reinforcement learning techniques. Although Apple has remained relatively tight-lipped about the specifics of the AKI team's projects, it is evident that the company is gearing up to introduce more intelligent and personalized AI experiences across its devices, tailored to its own unique approach and schedule.
