Your iPhone can now send encrypted messages to Android users; here’s how

Apple has launched the iOS 26.5 update for iPhones, introducing a major enhancement to messaging security between iPhone and Android users: end-to-end encrypted RCS chats. This feature, currently in beta, guarantees that messages exchanged between compatible iPhones and Android devices remain secure during transmission. For the first time, encrypted conversations will be clearly marked, making it easier for users to identify secure chats. Previously, only iMessage conversations among Apple users enjoyed end-to-end encryption, while chats between iPhone and Android users lacked this protection, even after Apple integrated Rich Communication Services (RCS). With the rollout of iOS 26.5, Apple extends encryption capabilities to supported RCS conversations. In addition to enhanced security, RCS messaging provides features such as high-quality media sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, and improved group chat functionalities compared to traditional SMS. However, users should note that the availability of this feature depends on various factors including carrier support, the specific Android device in use, and compatibility with the latest RCS standard. Consequently, not all users may have immediate access to encrypted RCS messaging. To check if encrypted RCS messaging is activated on an iPhone, users need to ensure their device is updated to iOS 26.5. This can be done by navigating to the Settings app, selecting General, and tapping on Software Update. After the update, users should go to Settings, select Apps, and then tap on RCS Messaging under the Text Messaging section. Inside the settings menu, users can verify whether the 'End-to-End Encryption (Beta)' option is enabled. Apple indicates that this feature is typically activated by default for supported devices and carriers. For Android users, checking RCS encryption settings involves opening Google Messages, tapping on their profile icon, and navigating to Message Settings. Under RCS Chats, users can see if the 'Automatically resend as text' option is enabled. Google has indicated that users can switch to RCS chats if an encrypted message fails to send. Apple first introduced RCS support to iPhones to improve messaging compatibility with Android devices, replacing traditional SMS for supported conversations. The inclusion of encryption now enhances privacy protections for these chats, bringing them closer to the security measures already present in iMessage.
