Apple has unveiled iOS 26.2, rolling out a series of exciting updates for iPhone users. Among the most significant enhancements is the introduction of AirDrop codes, which aim to make file sharing more secure and user-friendly, particularly when interacting with individuals outside of your contact list. The newly implemented AirDrop codes introduce a vital verification step for sharing files with unfamiliar users. Instead of relying solely on the existing AirDrop settings, the recipient's device generates a unique one-time code that the sender must input to finalize the transfer. This innovative approach, outlined in Apple’s release notes, allows users to confirm the identity of the person they are sharing files with, thereby minimizing the chances of accidental or unwanted exchanges. Previously, AirDrop provided three primary options: Receiving Off, Contacts Only, and Everyone for 10 Minutes. With the update to iOS 26.2, AirDrop codes effectively add a fourth choice. Users can now temporarily authorize someone not in their contacts by sharing a one-time code. Once the code is entered, both parties will appear as AirDrop options for a duration of up to 30 days, eliminating the need to save a new contact. To enhance user control, Apple has integrated a management section within Settings > General > AirDrop, allowing users to view and manage their authorized AirDrop connections. Notably, users will remain visible to those with whom they’ve shared a one-time code for a 30-day period, offering greater flexibility in file sharing while also maintaining privacy. Apple's initiative appears to recognize the need for users to share files regularly with the same individuals without the hassle of adding them to their contacts permanently. The introduction of AirDrop codes seeks to strike a balance between ease of use and security. While the 'Everyone for 10 Minutes' option may feel excessively open, and 'Contacts Only' might involve additional steps, AirDrop codes present a quicker, more controlled solution. This update enables users to enjoy extended access for ongoing sharing without sacrificing their privacy.
