Apple gets ready for AI in the enterprise with new ChatGPT configuration options

As artificial intelligence continues to permeate the corporate landscape, Apple is introducing innovative tools designed to give businesses enhanced control over AI usage among their employees. Set to launch with software updates in September, these features will allow enterprise customers to configure their own version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. With OpenAI reporting over 5 million business users for ChatGPT for Enterprise, the interest in AI solutions is clear. Companies are leveraging this AI service to interact with their internal data through AI agents. What stands out in Apple’s integration of ChatGPT for Enterprise is its flexibility; it is not confined to merely permitting or restricting access to ChatGPT. According to Apple’s support documents, IT administrators will have the capability to regulate access to any external AI provider, not limited to OpenAI. This approach opens up possibilities for Apple to establish partnerships with various prominent AI firms within the enterprise sector, all without needing to overhaul their underlying protocols. While Apple has been rolling out AI features geared towards end users—such as advanced writing tools and visual intelligence—it is also equipping IT departments with the means to manage access to these functionalities. Understanding the complexities involved in modifying sensitive systems and data, Apple allows businesses the autonomy to decide whether data processing occurs in the cloud or on local devices. This flexibility extends to letting companies choose which AI features to enable and whether employees can access ChatGPT’s cloud service, even if the business lacks a direct enterprise agreement with OpenAI. In addition to these AI advancements, Apple has announced other significant updates for its enterprise clients. An API for the Apple Business Manager service will soon be available, facilitating integration with other IT tools such as MDM products and help desk services. Enhancements in Device Management will simplify the process of migrating devices, particularly relevant during mergers and acquisitions. Apple's Return to Service feature is also being upgraded to allow devices to be wiped clean for the next user, while retaining installed applications. This change saves time and bandwidth, as IT administrators and users will no longer need to reinstall applications. Furthermore, this feature will be available for the Vision Pro for the first time. Shared Macs will benefit from a new authenticated Guest Mode, enabling employees to log in with their identity provider credentials, with their data removed upon logout. Businesses will also have the ability to incorporate NFC readers into Macs for easier login, allowing employees to simply tap their devices to access their accounts. All these enhancements will be part of Apple's comprehensive software updates for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other devices, launching in September.
