Apple beats Samsung, Xiaomi and Vivo, leads 2025 global smartphone shipments

In a remarkable turn of events, Apple has claimed its position as the leading smartphone manufacturer globally in 2025, outpacing competitors such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and Vivo. This shift comes as global smartphone shipments experienced a modest uptick of 2% year-on-year, driven primarily by heightened demand in emerging markets. Counterpoint Research reported that the overall recovery of the smartphone sector is attributed to favorable economic conditions and increasing consumer interest, particularly in developing regions. These markets played a crucial role in balancing out the diminished demand seen in more developed areas, where consumers are taking longer to upgrade their devices. Despite facing challenges related to costs and supply chains, the market showed consistent improvement over the course of the year. Apple achieved a remarkable 20% share of the global smartphone market, the highest among the leading manufacturers. Analyst Varun Mishra noted that the surge in demand for the iPhone 17 series, along with Apple's strong presence in emerging and mid-tier markets, significantly contributed to this success. The company’s extensive geographic reach and enduring brand loyalty helped secure its top position throughout the year. Samsung followed closely with a 19% market share, experiencing moderate growth in shipments. Xiaomi held the third spot with a 13% share, benefiting from consistent demand in emerging markets where its affordable products resonate well with consumers. Vivo rounded out the top four with a 3% increase in year-on-year shipments, attributed to a strategic push towards premium devices and effective retail strategies in India. In contrast, OPPO faced a decline of 4% in shipments, largely due to weakened demand in its home market of China and fierce competition across the Asia-Pacific region. As manufacturers adjusted their shipment strategies earlier in the year to mitigate potential tariff impacts, the momentum began to wane in the latter half of 2025, leading to steady shipment levels during that period. This dynamic landscape highlights the competitive nature of the smartphone industry and the various strategies employed by leading brands to maintain their market positions.
