Apple Inc. is significantly increasing its iPhone production in India, driven by the need to lessen its reliance on China amid ongoing trade tensions. According to a report by Bloomberg, the company is now manufacturing approximately 25% of its iPhones in India, marking a notable acceleration in its production efforts within the country. In 2025, Apple is projected to boost its iPhone output in India by about 53%, reaching nearly 55 million units compared to 36 million units in 2024. This expansion underscores India's growing importance as a manufacturing hub for Apple, which produces around 230 million iPhones globally each year. The shift to Indian production comes in response to challenges faced by iPhones shipped from China, particularly due to rising costs linked to uncertain US tariffs amid escalating tensions between the US and China. As a result, exporting iPhones from China to the US has become increasingly expensive, making India a more attractive option for manufacturing. Furthermore, Apple's enhanced presence in India is closely tied to the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This initiative provides financial incentives for companies that manufacture locally, making it more cost-effective for global firms to establish operations in India. Reports indicate that Apple is now assembling its latest iPhone 17 lineup in India, including the premium Pro and Pro Max models. The company collaborates with manufacturing partners such as Foxconn Technology Group, Tata Electronics, and Pegatron Corp. In addition to expanding its manufacturing footprint, Apple is also focused on increasing its market share in India, with plans to launch Apple Pay later this year and open six new retail stores across major technological hubs in the country.
