Apple has announced a delay in the release of its eagerly awaited iPhone Air model in China, citing regulatory challenges related to its eSIM configuration. The tech giant explained that wireless carriers in the region must obtain a specific government license to sell devices equipped with eSIM technology. Unfortunately, they have yet to receive the necessary approval. The company is actively working to expedite the availability of the iPhone Air in China. This new model, unveiled at Apple’s annual event, showcases a sleek design measuring just 5.6 millimeters thick, representing the first significant iPhone redesign since the launch of the iPhone X in 2017. Notably, the iPhone Air eliminates the traditional physical SIM card slot, opting instead for an integrated eSIM. Apple CEO Tim Cook emphasized the benefits of this design, stating that it allows for improved battery performance. "It's eSIM only, and so we were able to take the battery and extend the battery to areas that previously had the physical cell," Cook explained during an interview. Initially, Apple had planned to open pre-orders for the iPhone Air in China on Friday at 2 a.m. EST, with a sales date set for September 19. However, as of Friday morning, the product page on Apple’s Chinese website indicated, "Release information will be updated later." The site also confirmed that major carriers such as China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom will support eSIM for the iPhone Air, although the exact timing will depend on regulatory approval.
