Apple has pushed back against claims made by Elon Musk, the founder of X and xAI, asserting that the tech giant is favoring OpenAI in its App Store rankings. In a statement provided to Bloomberg, Apple emphasized that the App Store is structured to be fair and impartial, featuring a diverse array of applications through curated lists, algorithm-driven recommendations, and expert selections based on objective measures. The company highlighted its commitment to facilitating 'safe discovery for users' and creating valuable opportunities for developers. This comes in light of Musk's allegations that Apple is engaged in an 'unequivocal antitrust violation' by allegedly prioritizing OpenAI, which purportedly hampers the visibility of other AI applications. Musk voiced his frustrations on X, pointing out that Apple's refusal to feature X or xAI’s chatbot Grok in its 'Must Have' section contradicts their status, claiming X is the 'number one news app in the world' and Grok ranks fifth overall. "Are you playing politics? What gives?" Musk questioned, while hinting at potential legal action without presenting any supporting evidence for his claims. Interestingly, other AI applications, such as China’s DeepSeek and the US-based Perplexity, have enjoyed top rankings on the App Store recently, following Apple's collaboration announcement with OpenAI. In response to Musk’s allegations, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, characterized Musk's comments as a 'remarkable claim,' suggesting that Musk has previously leveraged his platform for his own benefit at the expense of competitors. Musk retorted with, 'Scam Altman lies as easily as he breathes.' Apple's focus on 'safe discovery' has led some to interpret it as a subtle nod to the controversies surrounding Grok, which has faced scrutiny for its uncensored and sometimes offensive output.
