Apple expands partnership with Tata to handle iPhone, MacBook repairs as sales surge in India

In a pivotal move, Apple has expanded its partnership with Tata Group, assigning the Indian conglomerate the responsibility for after-sales repairs of iPhones and MacBooks. This development marks an important shift in Apple's supply chain strategy, particularly as the tech giant moves away from its reliance on China for manufacturing. Already, Tata has been playing a crucial role, assembling iPhones for both local and international markets at several facilities in southern India, including one that manufactures specific iPhone components. Sources reveal that Tata will now take over repair operations previously managed by ICT Service Management Solutions, a subsidiary of Taiwan's Wistron. These repairs will be conducted at Tata's assembly facility located in Karnataka. With iPhone sales soaring, the repair market in India—already the second largest smartphone market globally—is poised for substantial growth. According to Counterpoint Research, approximately 11 million iPhones were sold in India in 2023, allowing Apple to capture a 7% market share, a significant increase from just 1% in 2020. A source indicated to Reuters that this expanded role reflects Apple's growing trust in Tata. Industry analysts believe this partnership could eventually lead Apple to offer refurbished devices in India, similar to its practices in the United States. Prabhu Ram, Vice President at CyberMedia Research, noted the importance of reliable warranty services for India's budget-conscious consumers, emphasizing the necessity of robust repair support, especially in smaller cities. The transition of repair responsibilities from Wistron to Tata is still in progress. While Apple's authorized service centers will continue to handle basic repairs, more complex issues will now be addressed at Tata's facility. Wistron’s ICT division will keep servicing clients outside of Apple's ecosystem. This development aligns with Apple's broader strategy to diversify its supply chains amid geopolitical challenges, with CEO Tim Cook recently stating that a majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. during the June quarter would be produced in India.
