Apple will end support for 16 older iPads, Macs, Watches, and Apple TVs

Apple has announced plans to discontinue software support for a number of older devices, including several iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and Apple TVs, as it prepares for the release of its new software generation. This decision was revealed during the WWDC 2026 event, where the company showcased upcoming updates for its product lineup. With the imminent launch of iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and tvOS 27, users of these legacy devices will find themselves without access to the latest features, security patches, and performance enhancements. Notably, Apple Watch models facing this cut include the Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, the first-generation Ultra, and the second-generation SE. These models lack the necessary hardware support for the new software, which will utilize Apple’s advanced S9 and S10 chipsets essential for the latest performance and AI capabilities. The iPad lineup is also affected, with the third-generation iPad Air, third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, first-generation 11-inch iPad Pro, eighth-generation iPad, and fifth-generation iPad mini all being excluded from updates to iPadOS 27. Apple now requires at least an A14 Bionic chip for the latest OS. Additionally, macOS 27 Golden Gate marks a significant shift, as it will only support Apple Silicon Macs, leaving Intel-based models like the 2019 MacBook Pro, 2020 MacBook Pro, 2020 iMac, and 2019 Mac Pro unable to upgrade. In a similar vein, older Apple TV devices, including the 2015 Apple TV HD and the 2017 Apple TV 4K, will no longer receive updates, restricting tvOS 27 to newer models. Altogether, 16 legacy Apple devices will no longer receive software updates, prompting users to consider an upgrade to enjoy the latest innovations.
