Apple blames EU’s Digital Markets Act for feature delays

In a recent statement, Apple has expressed strong opposition to the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into force three years ago. This regulation aims to curb anti-competitive practices among major tech firms by facilitating easier user transitions between platforms and enhancing data portability. However, Apple argues that these requirements are negatively impacting its ability to deliver new features to customers in the EU. The tech giant claims that the DMA's rules are compromising the user experience for Apple customers, exposing them to potential risks while limiting their choices. Specifically, Apple indicated that the enforcement of interoperability mandates has forced the company to postpone several anticipated features in the EU. Among these are the innovative live translation capability for AirPods, iPhone mirroring on Mac computers, and enhanced functionalities in Apple Maps. Apple warns that the list of delayed features may continue to grow as the company grapples with the challenge of aligning these interoperability requirements with its commitment to user privacy. According to Apple, the law demands that they make proprietary applications and features compatible with third-party systems, which poses a significant risk to user data protection. In a blog post, Apple elaborated on its concerns, stating, "We’ve suggested changes to these features that would protect our users’ data, but so far, the European Commission has rejected our proposals. Under the DMA, it’s illegal for us to share these features with Apple users until we make them available to other companies’ products. If we shared them any sooner, we’d face fines and could be forced to withdraw our products from the EU." This statement follows a significant $550 million fine imposed on Apple by the EU for violating the DMA by mandating app developers to use Apple’s payment system for transactions. Apple is currently appealing this decision. The company has also raised concerns that the DMA's requirements to allow users to install apps from third-party stores and use alternative payment methods increase the chances of scams, malware, and fraud. In its conclusion, Apple remarked, "It’s been more than a year since the Digital Markets Act was implemented. During this period, it’s become evident that the DMA is leading to a subpar experience for our users in the EU. It’s exposing them to new risks and disrupting the seamless integration that Apple products are known for. As technological advancements continue, our European customers' Apple devices will only lag further behind." As of now, the European Commission has not provided a response to Apple's latest claims.
