AI finds its way into Apple’s top apps of the year

On Thursday, Apple unveiled its annual App Store Award winners, continuing its tradition of honoring exceptional apps and games from the past year. This year, the prestigious title of iPhone app of the year went to Tiimo, a visual planner designed to transform to-do lists into structured plans using visual timelines. Notably, while Apple refrained from selecting a dedicated AI app or chatbot as the app of the year, artificial intelligence played a significant role among the winners. Tiimo utilizes AI to deconstruct tasks and estimate the time required for each step, assisting users in crafting realistic schedules. The iPad app of the year award was claimed by Detail, which enhances the video editing experience with an 'Auto Edit' feature powered by AI. This tool simplifies the editing process by automatically removing silences, implementing zoom cuts, and adding titles and captions. In the Cultural Impact category, StoryGraph emerged as a standout, employing machine learning algorithms to suggest book recommendations tailored to individual reading preferences. Similarly, Be My Eyes harnesses AI to provide visual descriptions of real-world images, aiding users who are blind or have low vision. Additionally, Strava, recognized as the Apple Watch app of the year, incorporates an AI assistant that analyzes workout data to generate actionable insights. Apple also announced winners across various platforms, including iPad, Mac, Vision Pro, Apple Watch, and Apple TV, along with a special mention for outstanding titles within its gaming subscription service, Apple Arcade. The selection process began in November when Apple identified 45 apps and games as finalists, ultimately narrowing the list down to 17 exceptional entries. These winners were acknowledged not only for their functionality but also for their contributions towards fostering understanding and inclusivity within the digital landscape.
