Apple removes gay dating apps from Chinese App Store at Beijing's request

Apple has announced the removal of two widely-used gay dating applications, Blued and Finka, from its Chinese iOS App Store, following directives from China's internet regulatory body. Reports emerged over the weekend that these apps had vanished from the App Store, prompting Apple to confirm its role in the decision. In a statement provided to CNBC, the tech giant explained that compliance with local laws is a necessity for its operations. 'In accordance with an order from the Cyberspace Administration of China, we have removed these two apps specifically from the China storefront,' Apple stated, noting that they were already unavailable in other regions. Interestingly, a lighter version of the Blued app remains accessible on the Chinese App Store, as confirmed by CNBC on Tuesday. This development marks yet another instance of China's intensified scrutiny over app availability in recent years. Previously, in 2022, Grindr, another prominent gay dating platform, was pulled from the iOS Store shortly after the Cyberspace Administration initiated a crackdown on content deemed illegal or inappropriate. In 2023, new regulations were introduced, mandating all applications catering to local users to register with the government and obtain licenses, leading to a surge of foreign apps being taken down. Regulatory pressures have persisted, with authorities directly urging companies like Apple to eliminate certain applications due to content concerns. In April 2024, for example, Apple removed Meta's WhatsApp and Threads from its iOS platform, citing national security reasons as directed by the CAC. Apple's readiness to acquiesce to such requests underscores the importance of the Chinese market, which is its largest overseas revenue source after the United States. The recent removals of Blued and Finka also highlight the growing restrictions and censorship faced by the LGBTQ community in China. Despite the decriminalization of homosexuality in 1997, same-sex marriage remains unrecognized, and significant advocacy organizations, including the Beijing LGBT Center, have been forced to shut down in recent years.
