Apple is set to increase its iPhone production despite facing a slowdown in the smartphone market from January to March 2026. According to a report from TrendForce, the tech giant manufactured approximately 60.2 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2026, securing its position as the second-largest smartphone maker by production volume. This figure represents a significant 19.7% increase compared to the same period last year, with the majority of devices being the latest generation and the new iPhone 17e. This ramp-up in production is expected to enhance availability and meet growing demand. In a related note, Samsung retained its title as the world's largest smartphone producer during Q1 2026, with around 62.6 million units produced—up 7.6% from the previous quarter and 2.3% year-over-year. The South Korean company has adjusted its manufacturing to satisfy the demand for its new Galaxy S-series devices. The smartphone and consumer electronics sectors are currently grappling with various challenges, primarily due to rising component costs, notably DRAM and NAND flash memory. However, Apple appears to be managing these pressures more effectively than many of its rivals, absorbing significant cost increases without substantially impacting its profitability. Meanwhile, Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo occupy the third to fifth spots in production rankings. These brands may encounter production uncertainties as they typically operate on thinner profit margins, making it difficult to bear the burden of rising manufacturing costs without either increasing prices or reducing output. Looking ahead, TrendForce predicts a continued decline in smartphone production, estimating a year-over-year drop of 16.2%, equating to over 1.051 billion units in 2026. This number could further diminish if the prices of essential components remain elevated.
