In a significant move, Apple has officially ended the production of its Mac Pro desktop, a decision that marks the culmination of a tumultuous relationship with this high-end machine. The company confirmed to 9to5Mac that the latest version, featuring the M2 Ultra chip and launched in mid-2023, will be the last of its kind for the foreseeable future. There are no plans for a new Mac Pro model. This decision comes as little surprise to industry observers who have noted the Mac Pro's declining relevance in recent years. Reports from late last year indicated that the desktop had been relegated to a lower priority, but the signs of its impending discontinuation had been evident since the mid-2010s. During this period, the Mac Pro underwent a drastic design overhaul, transforming into the controversial cylindrical model, often referred to as the 'trash can.' Unfortunately, this version saw little in the way of updates over a six-year span. Apple attempted to reinvigorate the Mac Pro line in 2019, introducing a new design that returned to a more traditional, upgradeable format reminiscent of the Power Mac era. However, by the time the M2 Ultra model was released four years later, it became clear that the demand for a large, expandable desktop had waned in the age of Apple Silicon. The discontinuation of the Mac Pro reinforces Apple's shift in focus, indicating that the market for such a powerful desktop has significantly diminished. Despite the loss of the Mac Pro, Apple continues to offer robust alternatives, including the M4 Max and M3 Ultra versions of the Mac Studio and the M4 Pro Mac mini. This decision follows the earlier discontinuation of the 27-inch iMac and the iMac Pro, both of which were also significant players in Apple's lineup. Reflecting on Apple's history, when Steve Jobs returned to the helm in 1997, one of his key objectives was to streamline the Mac product family. At that time, the range was cluttered with various models, leading to confusion among consumers. Jobs implemented a strategy that focused on four distinct computers to cater to different market segments, setting the stage for Apple's future direction in computing.
