Apple confirms macOS Tahoe will be final major update for Intel Macs

In a significant announcement, Apple has revealed that macOS Tahoe will mark the final major software update for its Intel-based Mac computers. This decision was unveiled during the WWDC 2025 Platforms State of the Union, where Matthew Firlik, Apple’s senior director of developer relations, emphasized the company's shift towards its proprietary Apple silicon. Firlik stated, "Apple silicon enables us all to achieve things that were previously unimaginable, and it’s time to put all of our focus and innovation there." He urged developers to assist users in transitioning to the Apple silicon versions of their applications, highlighting the company's commitment to its custom M-series chips, which began rolling out in 2020 with the completion of the transition marked by the Apple silicon Mac Pro in 2023. The phased withdrawal of support for Intel Macs has been anticipated, and this official announcement signals the commencement of that process with the upcoming macOS Tahoe, set to launch later this year. Notably, eligible Intel Macs, including the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, will continue to receive security updates for a minimum of three years, as confirmed by Apple spokesperson Lauren Klug. The macOS Tahoe will retain the Liquid Glass design aesthetic introduced with iOS 26 while incorporating new functionalities such as an enhanced Spotlight search, Live Activities support, and the inclusion of the Phone app on Mac for the first time. This development highlights Apple’s strategy to consolidate its ecosystem around in-house chips, which promise better integration, higher performance, and greater energy efficiency. Developers are being strongly encouraged to ensure their applications are compatible with Apple silicon, which now comprises the majority of the Mac user base. While users of Intel Macs will continue to receive essential security updates, the announcement clearly indicates a significant shift away from major innovations on Intel hardware.
