Apple is set to enter the competitive arena of AI-driven web search, positioning itself against established players like Perplexity and ChatGPT. According to a report from Bloomberg, the tech giant is developing an AI-based search tool, internally referred to as "World Knowledge Answers," which is expected to launch next year. This innovative search tool will be integrated into Siri and is anticipated to enhance user experience across Safari and Spotlight. Executives describe it as an "answer engine," designed to enable users to seamlessly access information from the internet, similar to the capabilities offered by existing AI platforms like ChatGPT and Google’s AI mode. The new feature will rely on large language models (LLMs), possibly sourced from Google, following a recent agreement between the two companies. This collaboration allows Apple to evaluate and test a Google-developed AI model to bolster Siri's functionality. The updated Siri experience is expected to incorporate a diverse interface that utilizes text, images, videos, and local points of interest, making search results more comprehensive and user-friendly. Apple's strategy involves developing three essential components for a revamped Siri experience: a planner to interpret user inputs, a web and device search system, and a summarizer to present information coherently. The planner will focus on understanding voice and text queries, while the search system will sift through both online and personal data. The summarizer aims to condense findings into clear responses. Additionally, Apple is exploring the use of third-party AI models for this initiative, notably a custom-built model from Google for the summarizer, which will operate on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers. While there are considerations for integrating Google models for the planner as well, Apple is still assessing options, including Anthropic's models, although previous negotiations fell through due to cost concerns. The anticipated updates to Siri and the new search functionality are part of a software update referred to internally as "Luck E," which is likely to align with the upcoming iOS 26.4 release expected in March of next year.
