Apple is hiking the prices of MacBooks and iPads due to the memory chip shortage

In response to soaring costs for memory and storage chips driven by the rapidly growing demand from the AI sector, Apple has announced price increases on several of its flagship products. Effective immediately, the entry-level MacBook Neo will now retail for $699, up from the previous price of $599. Similarly, the most affordable iPad will see its price rise to $449, a jump from $349, while the iPad Mini will now cost $599 after a $100 increase. Additionally, other devices are also experiencing price hikes, including the Apple TV, which will now be priced at $199 instead of $129, and the Apple Vision Pro headset, which has increased by $200 to a new price of $3,699. The HomePod speaker will also see its price rise to $349, up from $299. These updated prices became available on Apple’s online store on Thursday, though some retailers like Best Buy and Target may still display the previous prices. An Apple spokesperson explained that the surge in demand for memory and storage, largely attributed to the proliferation of AI data centers, has led to unprecedented increases in component costs. This is a situation the company has never encountered before in such a rapid manner. "We have now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products," the spokesperson stated. "We know this is not welcome news, and we are working tirelessly to find solutions." Last week, CEO Tim Cook indicated that consumers should prepare for potential price shocks, emphasizing that these increases were unavoidable due to ongoing memory chip shortages. The escalating prices and high demand have significantly impacted companies like Micron, which reported impressive earnings as a result. Despite these challenges, Apple remains committed to shielding its customers from the effects of these price surges, although Cook acknowledged that the situation has become increasingly untenable. Notably, the prices for the iPhone and AirPods have remained unchanged, reflecting Apple's strategic decisions amidst the current market dynamics.
