Apple raises Mac and iPad prices, spares iPhone for now

In response to a global shortage of memory resulting from the surge in AI infrastructure, Apple has announced price increases for its Mac and iPad product lines, as reported by Bloomberg. Currently, iPhone prices remain unchanged, although potential hikes could occur later this year. The newly introduced MacBook Neo will see its price rise from $599 to $699. Additionally, the base model of the MacBook Air has increased from $1,099 to $1,299, while the MacBook Pro's price has jumped from $1,699 to $1,999. The Mac Studio, designed for desktop performance, has also seen a significant increase, now priced at $2,499, up from $1,999. iPad prices have surged as well; the iPad Air will now be available for $749, up from $599, and the iPad Pro has increased from $999 to $1,199. Apple's smart home devices have also been affected: the standard HomePod has risen from $299 to $349, the HomePod Mini from $99 to $129, and the Apple TV box from $99 to $129. Apple acknowledged the difficult situation in the consumer electronics sector, stating, "The rapid expansion of AI data centers has created an extraordinary surge in demand for memory and storage. We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly." The company is actively seeking solutions to these challenges, as they recognize the impact this news may have on consumers. Last week, CEO Tim Cook indicated to the Wall Street Journal that price increases were unavoidable due to rising costs of memory and storage components driven by the AI boom. According to analyst firm Counterpoint, smartphone DRAM prices have surged by 50%, while NAND Flash storage prices have skyrocketed over 90% in the first quarter of 2026. Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint, noted, "We have reached a point where absorbing memory price hikes is impossible unless one wishes to run a business at a major loss. Memory prices have increased more than fourfold since Q4 2025, severely impacting profit margins across the consumer electronics industry. While Apple has managed to keep prices steady until now, hints at increases were made last week." The ongoing demand for AI infrastructure has significantly altered the memory supply chain, leading to higher Bill of Materials (BOM) costs that are expected to present a lasting challenge. Other PC and tablet manufacturers may soon follow Apple's lead by raising prices on select products or adjusting their offerings to emphasize higher-end devices. Meanwhile, suppliers like Micron are benefiting, reporting a fourfold increase in year-over-year revenue in their latest earnings report.
